The perils of toxins such as chocolate, anti-freeze, pesticides,
and some household plants are well recognized by pet owners.
Raisins and grapes, however, are relatively new to the list of
absolute NO NO's for cat and dog ingestion. According to the
National Animal Poison Control Center, pets can be extremely
sensitive to an unknown chemical in grapes, raisins, and juice or
wine made from grapes.

Even a small amount of raisins or grapes can make an animal
seriously ill. Without intensive treatment, pets can lapse into
kidney failure and die. First and foremost, keep pets away from
toxic substances, including vineyards that are accessible to your
animals. If you suspect that your cat or dog has ingested even a
few grapes or raisins, call your veterinarian immediately. Your
can reach the Animal Poison Control Center of the American
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals by calling (888)
426-4435 any time of the day or night, 365 days a year.

Your body destroys old bone cells and builds new ones every day.
This natural process is conducted by osteoclasts (the
terminators) and osteoblasts (the builders). As you age, the
former keep on truckin', but the latter slow down a bit. Older
folks don't build new bone as fast as they destroy old bone, and
the inevitable result is osteoporosis, a weakening of the bone
that increases the risk of fractures.

Alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) are
bisphosphonates, compounds that inhibit osteoclasts from munching
away on old bone, thus preserving what you already have, while
osteoblasts build new bone.

Alas, as is so often the case in medicine, every bit of good news
comes with a dash of not-so-good news. No surprise here:
Bisphosphonates may irritate the esophagus.

You may be able to avoid this irritation if the pill passes
quickly into your stomach. Proposed solution: Take your meds in
the morning, on an empty stomach, with a full glass of water, and
stay upright -- no crawling back into bed for a snooze -- for at
least 30 minutes.

Good sake (sah kay), a fermented rice wine, ranges from clear to
pale gold in color. The taste is very dry to noticeably sweet,
with a broad range of fragrances, from ricelike to fruity or
herbal, depending on the region it comes from and other factors.
Its alcohol content is similar to wine, about 15 percent.
Although sake, especially premium sake, is preferred chilled by
most sake lovers, drinking warm sake during cold weather is much
enjoyed in Japan. Ultimately, enjoy sake whichever way you
prefer.

Here are four popular types of sake:

* Junmai-shu:This pure rice (no alcohol added) sake, in
which about 70 percent of the rice grain remains, is
rich in flavor and body and goes well with a wide
variety of sushi dishes.

* Honjozo-shu: This sake is similar to Junmai-shu, with a
little alcohol added. It's a good choice for warm sake.

* Ginjo-shu: This sake is made with rice in which about
60 percent of the grain remains. Made with or without a
little alcohol, this sake is generally lighter in body,
with a fruitier fragrance than other sakes.

* Daiginjo-shu: This extremely smooth, very fragrant, and
light-tasting sake is made with the best sake rice,
with about 50 percent of the grain remaining. Made with
or without a little alcohol, this sake is expensive and
much sought after.

Just because evergreens retain their color throughout the cold
season, that doesn't mean they don't need some protection from
the damaging effects of ice, snow, and freezing wind. Here are
some winterizing pointers to keep your evergreens safe.

* Prevent drying. Narrow and broadleaf evergreens lose
moisture through their leaves in winter. Plant roots
can't absorb moisture from the soil in winter because
the soil may be frozen and therefore can't replace the
moisture the leaves lose. The foliage desiccates, turns
brown, and may drop, which can be serious with
evergreen azalea, holly, boxwood, and rhododendron.
Make sure the soil in which evergreens are growing is
well watered in mid to late autumn, before the soil
freezes. If the landscape where evergreens are located
is in a dry site (like sandy soil or under the overhang
of a roof), also make sure that the soil is well
watered in midwinter if the temperature is above
freezing.

* Wrap with twine. Plants such as arborvitae, juniper,
and yew often suffer damage from the weight of snow or
ice. Prevent plant breakage by fastening heavy twine at
the base of the plant and winding it spirally around
and upward to the top and back down in a reverse
spiral. This technique is more necessary as plants
become larger and begin to open at the top. Be certain
to remove the twine during the growing season.

* Use burlap screen. Stretch a section of burlap around
three stakes to protect young or not fully hardy plants
that are located in south, west, and windward
exposures. A burlap wrap with stakes protects plants
from the drying winter sun and wind, as well as drift
from de-icing salts applied to driveways and streets.
Wrap most of the plant, but leave some of the top of
the plant exposed. Evergreen plants need light, even in
winter.

Before they accept animals for transport, all airlines want to
make sure that the weather is not too hot or too cold before they
take off and when they land in another city. This precaution is
for the pet's safety. Often, planes have to wait on the tarmac
before taking off, and the temperature inside the plane and the
cargo section isn't controlled during those times.

When you make your reservations, check the airline policy on the
weather restriction because airlines frequently change their
policies. They don't take animals if they decide it's too hot or
too cold where you're landing. Take this into consideration when
you schedule your flight. It may be safer in the long run to take
a red-eye, or late-night, flight so that you can travel in the
coolest part of the day.

Mulled red wine is wonderfully spicy way to serve inexpensive
wine, whether you're entertaining a crowd or spending a quiet
evening at home with someone special. You may or may not sweeten
the wine with sugar. It's delicious either way.

Mulled Red Wine

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: About 15 minutes

1/2 cup water

1/4 cup sugar (optional)

8 whole cloves or allspice berries or 4 of each

1 cinnamon stick

1 thinly sliced orange or lemon

1 bottle fruity dry red wine such as Merlot, Zinfandel, or
Beaujolais

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the water, sugar,
cloves or allspice, cinnamon stick, and orange or lemon.
Heat until the sugar dissolves.

2. Add a bottle of dry red wine. Simmer until hot (do not
boil!), about 10 to 15 minutes, and serve.

Per serving: Calories 92 (From Fat 1); Fat 0g (Saturated 0g);
Cholesterol 0mg; Sodium 6mg; Carbohydrate 4g (Dietary Fiber 1g);
Protein 0g.

All kittens are more susceptible to disease than adult cats, but
because orphans don't benefit from their mom's immune system
they're leading candidates for upper respiratory infections. As
soon as you notice sniffles or sneezing, take your orphan to the
vet. You can't begin treatment too soon with kittens so
vulnerable.

Feline calicivirus and feline herpesvirus are the two most common
kitten colds. Like a human cold, the viruses themselves can't be
treated, but the symptoms can be managed, so get him to a vet
before the snotty nose gets too severe.

If your vet has prescribed medication, be sure and give it for as
long as he's recommended. If you stop medicating too soon, you
leave some of the stronger bacteria alive in your kitten's body.
When they reproduce, they come back with a vengeance.
